CBT - Compulsory Basic Training LICENCE:- In order to take CBT training or full licence testing you must be in possession of either a full UK car licence or a provisional UK car licence with valid provisional motorcycle entitlement (Category A) or provisional moped entitlement (Category P)It is possible to use an EU licence but first you will need to obtain UK counterpart (D58/2) showing provisional motorcycle entitlement this will then give you a UK driver number. You will need to phone the DVLA on 0300 790 6801 and request a D9 form, or alternatively you can download an application form here . If you hold a licence from outside the EU you may be able to exchange it to a UK licence if so you will need to obtain a form D1. For a list of countries which are able to convert their licences to a UK one, see this following page If you cannot exchange then use the D1 to apply for a provisional licence you maybe able to apply on line here http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/Motoringtransactions/BeforeyouapplyD/DG_172559 Getting started, the law says:- You must hold a CBT training certificate before you can be a learner on a moped, scooter or motorcycle. The only exception to this rule is if you passed your UK car test before 01/02/2001 you are automatically entitled to ride a 50cc moped without L-Plates and without taking CBT (although for safety we strongly recommend that you do). At age 16 a CBT certificate will allow you to ride up to a 50cc moped, and from 17 years up to a 125cc machine. For most persons completion of a CBT course can be achieved in one day, however you’re an individual so if you do need to come back on another day you would be entitled to a reduced daily rate.CBT certificates are valid for 2 years, no passengers or motorways or trailer towing allowed L-plates must be displayed. If you have not passed a full bike/scooter licence within the 2 years you will need to take a CBT course again to continue to remain legal.
