CBT Training Course

You must successfully complete a CBT training course and gain a DL196 certificate in order to ride legally as a learner. At 16 years you may then ride up to a 50cc moped restricted to approx 28mph and at 17 years and over up to a 125cc 15bhp max motorcycle or scooter. The CBT will be valid for 2 years. restrictions:- passengers, motorways, trailer towing or riding outside the UK not allowed and you must fit front and rear L-Plates.

One exception to the rule is if you passed your UK car test prior to 1st Feb 2001 by default you are permitted to ride a 50cc moped/scooter without a CBT and no L-Plates are required. It would however be sensible to take a CBT course if you have no previous experience.

What does CBT involve?

CBT is not a test it is a course you must complete to a satisfactory standard

Remember to bring your UK licence or E.U licence with D91, dress appropriately and make sure your eyesight is legal to ride. and that your Highway Code knowledge up to scratch.

see terms and conditions.

You can take CBT on a auto or geared bike/scooter and you will be covered to ride either type. We would suggest if you are buying a geared bike then take CBT properly on a geared bike otherwise it could be very dangerous. We will give you a free pre-CBT taster on a geared bike if you wish.

The CBT course involves five elements:

Introduction

practical on-site training

practical on-site riding

practical on-road training

practical on-road riding

The five elements have to be completed in sequence, although the order of the exercises within the element can be varied. You will move on to the next element when your instructor is satisfied you have learnt the necessary theory and demonstrated the practical skills to a safe basic level. Trainees must by law, receive a min two hour on-road ride in Element E.

Here at Passmasters we usally start our CBTs at 8.30am and you should allow 6 - 8 hours to complete the course. There is usually a lunch break which could be 2 hours if you are scheduled on the second afternoon element E. road ride. Our CBT sessions are usually conducted on a group basis of max 4 students to 1 instructor off road and max 2 to 1 on element E. on the road . We try where possible to stream the skill levels within the group and therefore suggest that beginners take advantage of our free 1/2-hour taster prior to taking CBT. For most students CBT can be completed in one day, however you’re an individual so don't worry if your struggling to get the hang of things. If you need to come back on another day to carry on you would be entitled to a reduced daily rate. We can sometimes arrange for CBT to be taken on a 1:1 basis at an additional fee if you prefer.

Elements A - D are site based during which you will be shown the machines controls and learn which safety checks to make. Next learn how to use the stands and how to start up, move away, slow ride, change gear, and stop practice. You will also practice emergency stops, U turns and other slow speed control exercise. left & right turns etc. and have a pre road briefing.

Element E. This is the on-road part of the course where your instructor will coach you up to a safe competent level of riding. This road ride section will take at least 2 hours and tuition will be given by way of a radio link and kerb side briefings. You will need to demonstrate to your instructor that you can ride safely in a wide variety of road a traffic situation.

Certificate of completion (DL196)

When all five elements have been satisfactory completed, a certificate of completion, called the DL 196, is issued. This is a legal document which validates the relevant entitlements on your driving licence. It is important that the holder of a DL196 considers the following points.

A DL 196 certificate entitlement lasts for 2 years - CBT will have to be retaken if both theory and Mod 1 & Mod 2 full licence tests are not passed within the 2-year certificate life.

For 50cc moped entitlement only, if you pass your car driving test whilst your DL196 is still current or complete a CBT course and obtain a DL196 after passing your car test, the certificate is not subject to expiry, you will therefore need to keep your DL196 certificate safely. Please note this applies to 50cc mopeds only, for riding over 50cc and up to 125cc motorcycles/scooters as a learner the DL196 remains valid for 2 years.

CBT+ PLUS COURSE

CBT Motorbike Training

This is the statutory CBT course plus an extra whole day on the road with a qualified instructor.

This extra day can be taken on your own bike or scooter if you wish. During this extra day we will be able to cover a lot more of road and traffic situations you are going to encounter whilst riding.

We can work on other things such as spatial awareness, speed, progress, road positioning and observations etc. This is a very good idea for the young or inexperienced rider.

The CBT can be taken on any day however the extra + day would usually have to be on a weekday by arrangement. Phone for availability (course currently unavailable)

CBT PERSONAL TUITION

CBT can be taken on a personal tuition basis if you prefer, this is 1:1 on the training site and on the road element.

Usually available on certain weekdays only by arrangement. Please call to discuss your requirements. Cost is our normal CBT price + 60% supplement.

FREE PRE COURSE TASTER LESSON

FREE PRE COURSE TASTER LESSON

No fee or obligation to book

If you are curious about riding a motorcycle or scooter or If you are a complete beginner we would suggest that you arrange a free 1/2 hour taster session prior to attending a CBT course. Attending this taster will help you and us, we will endeavour to teach you to move away and stop, cover some slow speed control.

If we can coach you to cover these basics its going to make you feel more confident if you wish to book a CBT.

These sessions usually take place at our Sudbury Hill Centre at 3.30pm mon - fri and 8 am most  sat & sundays. At High Wycombe centre thay take place at 8am most Tue & Wed. For either center advance booking is required. It is very difficult to arrange other times as we need a spare scooter/bike, instructor and room on the training site. You would need the balance to ride a bicycle, of a reasonable height and to be wearing appropriate clothing to participate.

Be aware that some training schools now only run CBTs on automatics, this is usually done to suit themselves  rather than you as they know its easier. They then sell you an extra geared conversion course to learn gears later! . We here run CBTs on geared bikes if you wish as well as autos, but would strongly suggest that if you are a novice that  you come for this taster prior to CBT as geared bikes can be more challenging.
